Biographie

Formation :

Après être sorti de l'université musulmane d'Aligarth, Khwaja Ahmad Abbas est d'abord critique de cinéma puis rédacteur en chef de la section cinéma au Bombay Chronicle , tout en travaillant à temps partiel à partir de 1936 à la société Bombay Talkies comme chargé de publicité.

Carrière :

Outre son activité romancière, Khwaja Ahmad Abbas ne tarde pas à écrire pour le cinéma : en 1941, Nouveau Monde , l'histoire d'un journaliste dont la vérité des informations qu'il doit diffuser est soumise à la mainmise de son patron, inscrit Abbas parmi les premiers cinéastes indiens engagés de son époque. Il fonde ensuite sa propre société de production et de distribution cinématographique, la Naya Sansar . Il réalise une série de films, mélodramatiques pour la plupart, dans lesquels certains thèmes sont récurrents : la famine au Bengale de 1943 (les Enfants de la terre , 1946, son premier succès), les enfants abandonnés (Munna , 1954), les luttes de libération nationale (Sept Indiens , 1969) ou l'irrigation (Deux Gouttes d'eau , 1971). Il écrit plusieurs films pour le réalisteur Raj Kapoor, dont Bobby (1973) est le plus réputé. Ses œuvres, à caractère social ou politique, retracent l'agitation des masses de l'époque et les révoltes populaires.

Autres activités :

Khwaja Ahmad Abbas a écrit une soixantaine dix livres en anglais, ourdou et hindi dont certains ont été traduits à l'étranger. Il est membre fondateur de la Progressive Writer's Association et de l'Association théâtrale du peuple indien (Ipta) qui monte des pièces à caractère social. Très influencé par Steinbeck ou Sinclair, il s'aligne dans une idéologie progressiste. De 1935 à 1987, il tient une chronique politique hebdomadaire dans The Bombay Chronicle puis au Blitz
