Film tourné d'après le roman célèbre de Margaret Mitchell et racontant la vie de Scarlett. Son premier mariage a été conclu. par dépit car Ashley, celui qu'elle aime, épouse la belle Mélanie. Lors de la guerre de Sécession, son mari meurt. Mélanie enfante dans des circonstances dramatiques et Scarlett est aidée par l'envoûtant capitaine Rhett Butler. Réduite à la misère par les Nordistes, la famille doit payer de lourds impôts. Scarlett épouse alors le fiancé de sa s.ur pour retrouver un peu de bien-être. Ce second mari meurt bientôt pour laisser la place à Rhett Butler. Leur enfant meurt ; Scarlett se sépare de l'aventurier, songe à s'unir à Ashley, qui, devenu veuf, lui a enfin déclaré son amour. Mais elle ne peut se passer de Rhett.
