Carrière :
Remarqué pour avoir réalisé les clairs-obscurs en extérieur de La Brigade du suicide (Anthony Mann, 1947), John Alton s'illustre à la fin des années 1940 dans les films noirs comme Il marchait la nuit (Alfred L. Werker, 1948) ou Association criminelle (Joseph H. Lewis, 1954). Maître de la photographie, il apporte sa grande expérience de la lumière aux comédies musicales stylisées de Vincente Minnelli, depuis Le Père de la mariée (1950) jusqu'à La Femme modèle (1957), une collaboration fructueuse récompensée en 1951 pour Un Américain à Paris (1951). Il travaille également sur les derniers films d'Alan Dwan (Quatre étranges cavaliers , 1954 ; Le Mariage est pour demain , 1954) et plusieurs de Richard Brooks (Elmer Gantry , 1960).Autres activités :
