Un ami canadien de Harry Lime, Holly Martin, arrive à Vienne juste à temps pour assister à son enterrement. Il apprend par bribes que Harry était chef de gang. Coup de théâtre : le mort apparaît dans l'ombre d'un seuil. Le chef de la police anglaise découvre sa retraite, les égouts de Vienne. Sa fiancée Anna, perquisitionnée, est arrêtée pour faux papiers d'identité. Tchèque, elle sera livrée à la police russe. Martin accepte de livrer Lime pour qu'Anna reste à Vienne, car il s'est épris de la fiancée de son ami. Dans la Grande roue du champ de foire, Lime montrera à Martin son mépris des vies humaines. Anna refuse le marché. Martin, après une poursuite extraordinaire dans les égouts de Vienne, finira par tuer son ami au visage torturé d'angoisse. Anna renoncera a son amour.
