Biographie

Formation :

Orpheline à cinq ans, Barbara Stanwyck travaille dès l'âge de treize ans. A quinze ans, elle est danseuse dans les Ziegfeld Follies. En 1926, elle débute au théâtre et au cinéma.

Carrière :

De son enfance difficile, Barbara Stanwyck a tiré une volonté et une force remarquables. Aussi dote-t-elle ses personnages - le plus souvent, des femmes indépendantes - d'une dureté et d'une énergie hors du commun. Cependant, ses premiers films, Le Signe sur la porte (George Fitzmaurice, 1929) et Mexicali Rose (Erle C. Kenton, 1929), sont des échecs. Il lui faut attendre de rencontrer le réalisateur Frank Capra pour accéder à la reconnaissance. Sous sa direction, elle incarne une prédicatrice itinérante dans Miracle Woman (1931), puis tourne Amour défendu (1932). Dès lors, on la considère comme une star, au même titre que Greta Garbo et Marlene Dietrich. Le réalisateur William A. Wellman s'intéresse alors à elle et lui permet de démontrer sa force de caractère à travers des personnages faisant face à l'adversité. Dans L'Ange blanc (William A. Wellman, 1931), elle incarne une infirmière combative, puis, dans So Big (1932), une fermière opiniâtre. Fille du peuple dans L'Homme de la rue (Frank Capra, 1941), aventurière et Lady anglaise dans Un coeur pris au piège (Preston Sturges, 1941), l'actrice donne une dimension bouleversante à ses héroïnes. Assurance sur la mort (Billy Wilder, 1944) marque l'apogée de sa carrière. En vamp blonde diabolique et perverse, la comédienne impressionne. Après ce film, Barbara Stanwyck compose à maintes reprises des personnages de cette même trempe (L'Emprise du crime , Lewis Milestone, 1946 ; Le Démon s'éveille la nuit , Fritz Lang, 1951). La comédie lui sied également. Dans Miss Manto est folle ( Leigh Janson, 1937), puis dans Un coeur pris au piège (Preston Sturges, 1941), elle incarne une séduisante capricieuse. Elle apparaît au cinéma pour la dernière fois dans Celui qui n'existait pas (William Castle, 1964), au coté de Robert Taylor, son ex-mari.

Autres activités :

Barbara Stanwick a présenté un show à la télévision de 1960 à 1961. Elle est également apparue dans des téléfilms et des feuilletons : La Grande Vallée , Dynastie , ou encore Les Oiseaux se cachent pour mourir .
